Changing robes are as ubiquitous at wild swimming spots as giddy, flushed-cheeked women clutching travel mugs of steaming coffee and chatting excitedly. You've probably also seen people rocking change robes on dog walks, cuddling up in them on camping trips and donning them to brave blustery coastal walks.

Thanks to their warming, moisture-wicking and waterproofing abilities, changing robes are arguably the most important piece of cold water swimming kit (after a swimsuit, that is). But nowadays they're so much more — they're the versatile outdoorsy companion that, despite their practicalities, also foray into the fashion world — everyone from A-listers like Harry Styles and Davina McCall to the trendy 'cool girls' of Instagram have been spotted in the outerwear staple.

But if you are a fan of plunging yourself into icy cold water, we have good news. Thanks to your new BFF (that's a changing robe, in case we weren't clear), you don't have to put up with the post-swim shakes to reap all the benefits of cold water swimming. Keep scrolling to find out exactly why changing robes are the ideal cold water/outdoors ally, how they work and the best ones to buy.

The best changing robes in 2026

In a hurry? Here's our pick of the best changing robes at a glance. Keep scrolling for the full list, plus the benefits of changing robes and how to use them.

What to look for when shopping for a changing robe

A changing robe is a big investment, but a good one should last for years — so it’s worth thinking carefully about how and where you’ll use it before you buy.

    • Versatility - Some changing robes come with removable layers or lighter linings, making them suitable year-round. Others are streamlined enough to double up as a winter coat, which means you’ll get far more wear (and value) out of them beyond swim spots.
    • Protection - If you’re swimming through the colder months or facing proper British weather, look for a waterproof and windproof outer shell with fully taped seams. A waterproof rating of at least 10,000mm will handle most wet weather, while 20,000mm+ is better for sustained downpours. Breathability matters too, especially post-swim, as it helps prevent that clammy, overheating feeling once you’ve warmed up.
    • Lining and warmth - Multi-layer robes offer greater insulation, but the type of lining makes a difference. Fleece and sherpa trap heat well, while towelling or microfibre options are more focused on absorbency and quicker drying. Think about whether you prioritise maximum warmth or comfort against damp skin.
    • Changing-friendly design - Side splits, two-way zips and generous arm room make changing far easier — particularly when you’ve got cold hands and minimal patience (that hot coffee is calling!).
    • Pockets - Large, ideally zipped interior and exterior pockets are invaluable for stashing keys, phones, snacks or even a hot water bottle. Some robes now include reach-through access pockets, which are especially handy in winter.
    • Packability - If you're travelling, camping or tight on boot space, check whether it packs into a stuff-sack and how bulky it feels. Some robes are surprisingly compressible; others are built purely for maximum warmth.
    • Size and length - You want enough room to change comfortably without flashing half the beach. Longer styles provide more coverage and warmth, particularly in winter, while shorter cuts can feel easier to wear day-to-day.
    • Sustainability - Many brands now use recycled fabrics and PFC-free waterproof coatings, and some offer repair or recycling schemes. If environmental impact is important to you, look for recognised certifications and durability — buying better and buying once is often the most sustainable choice.

      How we test changing robes

best changing robes tried and tested

Luckily there are a fair few wild swimmers on the WH team, so we put these robes to the test through all seasons and conditions, from temperate beach days to chilly winter dips in the channel (seriously, brrr). We took them camping, dog walking, into the garden to don after ice baths, as well as to beaches, rivers, lakes and urban open water swimming spots — and even on an outdoor fitness tour of Guernsey. Plus we tested waterproof claims both in the great outdoors but also by turning the shower head on them.

All the while, we were assessing comfort, warmth, waterproofing, how breathable the robes were and how quickly they dried, as well as how handy features like pockets, wind baffles and adjustable cuffs were in practice. We took note of how usable certain features were with cold hands — tactile rubber zip pulls really come into their own — plus, the crucial test: how easy they were to actually get changed under.

The changing robes we've chosen here are products we truly recommend and feel are worth their price points — they can be pretty costly, so we've made sure they're a sound investment and will stand the test of time.

19 best changing robes to buy in 2026

From celeb-favourite Dryrobe to the coveted Red Alter EVO Pro, we've handpicked the very best changing robes to shop in 2026. Dive in.

      1
      Best changing robe overall

Red Dry Waterproof Changing Robe Alter Evo

Dry Waterproof Changing Robe Alter Evo

      Pros

      • Low bulk but super cosy
      • Excellent breathability for a fully waterproof robe
      • Thoughtful cold-hands detailing (large zip pulls, fleecy zip guard)
      • Streamlined fit makes it more wearable beyond swim spots

      Cons

      • Less coat-like compared to some other changing robes
      • Slimmer fit may mean sizing up for maximum changing space

We didn't think Red could improve on the Original Pro Change Evo Robe, but my God have they done it (and in spades), with this upgraded version shooting straight to the top of our recommendations.

First up, the inside is impossibly soft and snuggly — to the point we proudly ask fellow swimmers to stroke the inside on a regular basis — while still soaking up and wicking moisture in record times. It retains plenty more of the OG features, including a wind baffle, toggle hood, large hanging hook, reflective details, zip and popper placket and full two-way zip — a brilliant feature, as you can unzip the bottom for a bit more space if you need it when changing. There are also side splits with elasticated darts to give even more space, and the zip pulls are huge and rounded, so you can fit gloved fingers through them with no dramas.

Onto the upgrades then: this baby has higher waterproof and breathability ratings than its predecessor, with laser-cut ventilation on the hem and underneath the arms, which speeds up your drying time (but don't worry, it doesn't cause a chilly draught). Speaking of, we really appreciated the new fleecy zip guard when out in the cold, which ensured there was no freezing metal touching the skin of our face.

The new peaked hood is also excellent. You can see clearly, it doesn't flop about like unstructured hoods and stays put in windy conditions. The cuffs have also been improved, with a length of unlined, waterproof shell that you can fold down over your hands for extra water- and wind-proofing while still retaining full dexterity as you're not hemmed in by a thick lining. Then they're easy to roll up when you’re safe and warm in the café post dip and need your hands for chowing down that bacon sarnie.

On the pockets front this also sings, with zipped valuables pockets on both the inside and out, large fleece-lined hand warmer pockets that have invisible magnetic closures for when not in use, and a huge water bottle (or pants) pocket on the inside. This, for us, was the main feature the old version of this robe was lacking, so we're really glad to see it incorporated in this model.

The last main upgrade is the fit. Designed to be more streamlined, it's a little slimmer than the previous version, and therefore makes for a more versatile item. Because of this, we sized up, but it doesn't seem that was necessary as we still had tons and tons of space to change underneath. The shape is still less coat-like than some other options, but if you don’t care about that (we don’t) then you can’t go wrong. Prepare for next-level cosiness.

It also packs down well and is pretty light for what it is, but grab one of the brand’s compression bags if you really want to pack it down small.

Overall this is an incredibly well-thought out product we genuinely love, and it's hard to find a negative. It's available in eight colours — we have the sage green (pictured) and it really is beautiful.

Buy if: You're after a quality, does-it-all changing robe.
Don't buy if: You just need a beach coverup.

      Dryrobe Nexus

      Nexus

      Pros

      • 30,000mm waterproofing with excellent breathability
      • Reach-through pockets are brilliantly practical
      • Sleeker, less bulky silhouette than the original

      Cons

      • Expensive at £225

Two and a half years in development, the Dryrobe Nexus is the brand’s most refined and innovative design yet — created for people who want serious weather protection without looking like they’re permanently en route to the shore. Retailing at £225, it bridges the gap between technical robe and sleek parka, with a more tailored silhouette that feels genuinely wearable beyond the shoreline.

Performance is, as you’d expect, uncompromising. The 30,000mm waterproof ripstop nylon outer with PFC-free DWR and fully taped seams offers industry-leading protection, while 10,000 breathability keeps things from feeling clammy. We tested it during a February rooftop cold plunge in London and it cut windchill instantly, warming us up fast thanks to the lighter-weight, quick-drying fleece lining.

Design details feel considered rather than gimmicky. The matte finish and all-black colourway make it look like a coat first, changing robe second (though there is a bolder sand/orange/camo print version if you prefer). The fleece-lined peaked hood stays put, the oversized Aquaguard zips are easy to operate with cold hands, and the reach-through pockets (a genuine game changer) let you access mid-layers without unzipping or wrestling your arms through the sleeves — genius.

Front pockets are huge, there’s a mesh pocket for swimwear, and reflective detailing on the hood adds subtle visibility.

It’s still generously sized — we’d suggest sizing down if you’re planning to wear it mainly for city life — but it’s noticeably less bulky than the original Advance.

Buy if: You want uncompromising weather protection that works just as well on a commute as it does post-plunge.

      Roaming Sherpa Lined Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Softer structure makes it comfortable for all-day wear
      • Packs into stuff sack with minimal effort
      • Stylish colour blocking sets it apart

      Cons

      • Side pockets aren’t zipped

Putting the fabulous ski-inspired design aside, this changing robe ticks all the boxes.

It's super cosy, thanks to the thick sherpa fleece lining and adjustable velcro cuffs, while the outer shell is made from water-repellent 100% recycled polyester ripstop, sourced from single-use plastic bottles.

Side slits and a two-way zip make changing easy, and there's hand warming pockets to the front, plus an internal velcro-sealed pocket. Plus it comes ready packed away in its own stuff-sack!

It has a softer, more forgiving structure than some other changing robes so doubles up as a great cosy coat for camping trips, dog walks, chilly pub gardens... you get the idea.

      Available in two colourways.

      Delta Roam Beaumont Robe

      Beaumont Robe

      Pros

      • Removable valuables pouch is genuinely useful
      • Smart enough to double as an everyday winter coat
      • Excellent pocket organisation plus large hanging loop

      Cons

      • Could be roomier — we recommend sizing up if you want loads of space

      Shop all colours

If it weren’t for it’s incredible moisture-wicking and super toasty properties, we’d struggle to tell this changing robe apart from a trendy winter coat.

It's also packed with thoughtful features you won't see on your standard parka, including tactile, easy-pull two-way zippers, adjustable Velcro cuffs to keep the warm in, a toggle hood, a D-clip attachment and a large hanging loop — ideal for busy changing rooms where you're cramming all your stuff on one peg.

And we haven't even gotten to the pockets yet! There are more than we could reasonably use, including a key stash and even a removable pouch that doubles as a handy valuables compartment you can detach and store in your dry bag. All bar one of the pockets are zipped, and the two on the outside are lined in soft fleece forgiving to chilly hands.

We recently wore this on a blustery walk in the Sussex hills and it felt like being cosy in bed while a storm rages outside — super cosy, in other words.

This warm chestnut is even more gorg IRL, but it also comes in more traditional green, black and navy, as well as this warm sand colour and a lilac grey shade.

We recommend sizing up if you do want to use it predominantly to change under, as the fit is a little snug.

Buy if: You want style, substance and versatility, with loads of storage.

Dryrobe Advance Long Sleeve Changing Robe

      Advance Long Sleeve Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Extremely warm — ideal for deep winter use
      • Very spacious
      • Trusted, proven design

      Cons

      • Quite bulky

As iconic as they are ubiquitous, changing robe pioneer Dryrobe counts Harry Styles and Rita Ora among its fans, and we can see why. It’s really roomy, so easy to change comfortably underneath, and the recycled lining is made to replicate lambswool — big cosy points.

The outer is also recycled — it’s made from waterproof and windproof nylon, plus the sleeves are fitted to help you feel less like you’re flailing about in a tent, and it has loads of deep, fleece-lined pockets, including a huge A4-sized internal section and a zipped waterproof chest pocket that's ideal for stowing your phone.

We've worn this for everything from wild swimming and camping to dog walks, and it's done a sterling job at keeping us warm and dry in all weathers, all while looking chic too. What more can you really ask for?

Dryrobes come in a range of colours and designs, but right now we're big fans of the camo and pink lining version.

      ZONE3 Active-Flex Changing Robe

      Active-Flex Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Loads of pockets
      • Lightweight compared to bulkier parkas
      • Great value for a performance-led swim brand

      Cons

      • Water resistance won’t hold up in sustained rain

ZONE3 is a trusted brand amongst triathletes and cold water swimmers thanks to its brilliant range of neoprene gear and sporty swimsuits. So it makes perfect sense that its budget changing robe, the Active-Flex, stood up to our tests.

Firstly, it serves its primary purpose in that there's tons of space to change underneath, with a split at the front (beneath the zip) to make it easier. But it manages to not be too bulky, so you can wear this as a general outdoors coat if you wish. It's also super toasty, with a thick fleece interior that wicks sweat well and keeps you well insulated post-dip. Plus the cosy hood surrounds the face, parka-style.

Features-wise, this robe is replete: there's a two-way zip with a tactile rubber pull, zip garage and placket (make sure to tuck it properly to avoid snagging); adjustable drawstrings on the hood; reflective detailing; a hanging loop and even a handy space to write your name (à la school uniform) in case your mates get the same robe and you don’t want to mix them up.

There are fleece-lined hand warmer pockets as well as an interior zipped valuables pocket on left chest (which fits a phone) and an open pocket on the lower right interior — ideal for stashing your underwear or a small hot water bottle.

It's worth noting that the sleeves are tapered but not cuffed, and the robe is water-resistant but not fully waterproof, so don't rely on it for heavy showers. That said, it feels high quality and durable, plus we love the understated motif on the back.

Buy if: You're after a features-loaded robe at a cut price.
Don't buy if: You're expecting downpours, or want a colour other than black.

      Gill Aqua Parka

      Aqua Parka

      Pros

      • Proper heavy-duty storm protection (ideal for coastal weather)
      • Welded seams give extra peace of mind
      • Four-way stretch improves mobility

      Cons

      • Steer clear if you don't love a rubber rain coat look

This change robe from Gill looks and feels more like a rubber waterproof coat than a toasty changing capsule, but thanks to four-way stretch material still has all the manoeuvrability of a great robe, plus the durability of a heavy-duty parka.

Welded seams keep things seriously dry on the inside — we've sprayed it directly with a high-pressure shower just to be sure — while the furry fleece lining is thermal, keeping things warm and wicking away moisture effectively.

It is roomy, so there's plenty of space to change inside, with a two-way zip to make things easier. The adjustable cuffs help to trap heat inside and there's an interior zipped valuables pocket plus two soft-lined external pockets too — a lifesaver for chilly hands.

It doesn't pack down quite as well as some others on the market, but thanks to its more traditional coat looks you're more likely to be wearing it than stashing it away anyway.

Passenger Escapism Sherpa Lined Changing Robe

      Escapism Sherpa Lined Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Impressively packable for a sherpa-lined robe
      • Wind-resistant despite lightweight feel
      • Strong eco credentials (recycled materials + PFC-free coating)

      Cons

      • Hand pockets aren’t fleece-lined

We love everything about this change robe — from the gorgeous colourways (the rust is a WH fave) to the subtle chest branding and bold back logo. It’s made using 100% recycled single-use plastic bottles with a PFC-free water-resistant coating, which gives it strong eco credentials without bumping up the price.

Let’s talk about the packability, because it genuinely surprised us. It arrives folded into a drawstring backpack-style stuff-sack roughly the size of an A3 sheet of paper, and we fully expected it to be a nightmare to squeeze back in. It wasn’t. At all. The robe folds down easily and slid back into the bag with room to spare — no wrestling required. For trips where boot space is tight (or you’re travelling light), that’s a huge win.

Despite packing down so well, the thick sherpa fleece lining feels properly cosy and wind-resistant, and the robe never feels flimsy. Water beads and runs off the outer shell in light showers, and the adjustable Velcro cuffs help trap warmth. There are side slits for easier changing, a rubber-coated two-way zip pull that’s easy to grip with cold hands, plus an internal chest pocket and durable hanging loop (though we’d like it slightly longer).

The hand pockets aren’t fleece-lined and there’s no dedicated "pants pocket", but for the price, it’s a brilliant all-rounder and great value adventure companion.

      Available in six colours.

      Pros

      • Clever modesty panels under arms
      • Excellent price point
      • Lightweight and easy to wash

      Cons

      • Limited weather protection

Decathlon is known for churning out decent basics you can rely on, but this unisex changing robe actually has a number of clever features you'd expect to see from more premium brands.

Stretchy panels under the arms mean there's no gaping holes to facilitate an accidental boob flash, plus they make it easier to change. There are also openings where you'd expect pockets to be, so you can slip your hands through, rather than under, the robe when hopping out of a wet swimsuit — a feature we love as you don't have to hike the robe up above chilly knees.

Being 100% cotton it's machine washable and the large front pocket makes for a great hand warmer when you've finished your coffee (and bacon sarnie).

This unisex robe is currently available in black and teal or sand.

      Regatta Adult Changing Robe

      Adult Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Impressive waterproofing at mid-range price
      • Generous sizing makes changing easy
      • Wide range of colourways/patterns

      Cons

      • No wind baffle

This changing robe from outdoors clothing brand Regatta means serious business — which for the price point, we found pretty impressive. It feels durable and heavy duty, and has that satisfying, almost crunchy texture on the outside shell that tells you it’s going to protect you from the elements — and we can confirm the waterproofing is sound. That said, the robe isn't too bulky — certainly not to Dryrobe or Gill Aqua Parka standards — but does rustle a bit in the wind.

The fleece lining is gorgeously soft and dries fairly quickly, while Velcro cuffs help keep the heat in — but there isn't a wind baffle and the hood is on the smaller side, so you don't quite get that cocoon feeling you do with some other robes. Overall the robe is still very warm, just prepare for a chill on your neck/chin.

The zip is two-way, and while thought has gone into the upper pull (it's larger, to help you operate with cold hands), it's not got the tactile rubber features you get on more premium options. Storage-wise there are two zipped pockets on each side which are lined with a thin fleece so aren't massively cosy but are useful, as is the zipped valuables pocket on the inside of the robe.

While there are only two sizes available, it's very generously sized, with tons of space to change under. And did we mention it comes in leopard print? (More demure designs are available.)

Mountain Warehouse Tidal Womens Waterproof Changing Robe

      On Sale
      Tidal Womens Waterproof Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Waterproof, windproof shell with taped seams
      • Spacious with mobility-enhancing side splits
      • Structured, adjustable hood

      Cons

      • Hanging loop is small

The Mountain Warehouse Tidal Women’s Waterproof Changing Robe is a seriously capable option that punches above its price point. It’s built with a waterproof and windproof shell with taped seams that genuinely keeps rain at bay — water beads and runs right off this one, so you’re not left feeling soggy even in downpours (though it's worth noting the brand lists it as 'suitable for light rain'). The borg-style fleece lining is deep and warm, though it doesn’t feel as plush or luxurious as the fleece you’ll find on more expensive robes — but it still does a solid job of keeping you cosy after a chilly swim.

One of the best things here is the generous space inside: there’s plenty of room to change comfortably, and the side splits add extra mobility. The hood is well structured, so it stays out of your face in wind and rain, and there’s a toggle at the back and front for adjustability — a thoughtful touch you don’t often see at this price. Velcro cuffs help trap warmth, and there’s an interior chest pocket (with Velcro) for essentials, though the main hand pockets are lined in a thin fleece and aren’t zipped.

On the downside, the internal hanging loop is annoyingly small, which makes hanging it up a bit fiddly, and while the two-way zip feels sturdy, we’d have liked a more tactile pull for cold hands. Still, for the money, this is a feature-rich, durable changing robe that will keep you dry in most conditions.

Buy if: You want a well-made, waterproof changing robe that works hard in wet weather without breaking the bank.

      Rapanui Women's Changing Robe

      Women's Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Organic cotton towelling lining
      • Plastic-free, strong sustainability credentials
      • Spacious but flattering fit

      Cons

      • Only water-resistant (not for heavy downpours)

If you prefer your outdoor kit to feel less technical and more natural, the Rapanui Changing Robe is a brilliant option. Made from certified organic cotton with a PFC-free water-resistant coating, it arrives in a simple paper bag — no plastic in sight — and can even be sent back to be remade when it’s worn out (you’ll get credit towards your next purchase). Big eco points.

The outer has an almost worn-in waxed jacket feel, soft to the touch and far less “cold water swimmer core” than most robes on the market. Despite not looking particularly waterproof at first glance, we were genuinely impressed: water beads and rolls straight off in light to moderate rain. In heavy downpours it will likely wet out eventually, but for everyday showers and post-dip warmth, it more than holds its own.

Inside, instead of fleece, you get organic cotton terry loop towelling — including down the arms — which feels beautifully absorbent and cosy, like being wrapped in your favourite bath towel but better. It’s roomy enough to change comfortably (we tested the S/M) without looking oversized, and thoughtful details like side splits, a two-way zip, huge towelling-lined front pockets and a poppered chest pocket add practicality. The hood is drawstring adjustable, though the cuffs aren’t.

A slight plasticky smell from the coating is noticeable at first, but this fades quickly — just air it out before wearing.

Buy if: You love a natural cotton feel and want a sustainably made robe that’s cosy and absorbent post-swim.
Don’t buy if: You need serious storm-proof protection or lots of size options.

F&F Active EVERYWEATHER Waterproof All Weather Robe

      EVERYWEATHER Waterproof All Weather Robe

      Pros

      • Waterproof with taped seams — excellent value
      • Cosy lining and adjustable hood for warmth
      • Practical storage with multiple pockets

      Cons

      • Interior lining isn’t ideal when wet and could be more breathable

At just £55, the F&F Active EVERYWEATHER Waterproof All Weather Robe is one of the most wallet-friendly ways to get serious weather protection without compromising on core features — perfect if you need a functional changing robe on a budget.

It’s fully waterproof with taped seams, and even in light showers water just beads and runs off the surface — a reassuring start for a coat at this price. The soft interior lining feels warm and cosy straight off, although it isn’t the most moisture-wicking we’ve tried, so we wouldn’t recommend popping it on when you're soaking wet — towel off first for best comfort. Once aired, the lining dries fairly quickly. The longline cut and toggle-adjustable hood also help keep rain and wind at bay, and the elasticated cuffs trap warmth nicely.

Practicalities are strong here too: a two-way zip with a long, tactile pull is much easier to use with cold hands, there’s a zipped interior valuables pocket plus an open chest pocket, and two zipped hand pockets on the outside. The hanging loop inside is handy but not huge, so if you’re juggling a bag and layers it might be a bit tricky to fit over a peg. One small niggle is the shell material rustles a bit, and breathability isn’t the best — but again, for the price it’s an easy trade-off.

Animal Misty Women's Fleece Lined Parka

      Misty Women's Fleece Lined Parka

      Pros

      • Generous front pocket capacity
      • Surf heritage brand credibility

      Cons

      • Sleeves aren't cuffed

This 100% recycled polyester robe from surfing mainstay Animal has been tested to withstand up 2,000mm of rain in a 24hour period and has taped seams to keep out water, so you can rest assured you’ll stay dry in Britain's drizzly summer.

The lining is made from borg, a faux shearling-style material, and is super breathable, allowing any moisture to wick away and keep you warm and comfortable.

A full zip on the front means getting it on and off is simple, plus the toggle hood means you can pull it tight to keep out windchill on those blustery days by the shore.

The double pockets on the front are huuuge, it's made from 100% recycled materials, plus we love the cute motif on the back.

      Speedo Therma Change Robe

      Therma Change Robe

      Pros

      • Aluminium layer genuinely boosts warmth
      • Drawstring waist improves heat retention
      • Sporty aesthetic stands out

      Cons

      • Very oversized fit

Known for its quality swimwear, it’s only right that Speedo's offered up something to chuck over the top of their fantastic cossies. This changing robe is definitely one for the fashion-conscious, with aesthetic additions doubling up as practical features too, such as a drawstring waist to keep in the heat, a trench coat-style storm flap and a seriously oversized zip just made for numb hands. The fun splashes of neon yellow are just for the lewks though.

Despite scoring top fashion points, that’s not to say it won’t work just as hard as other robes on the market. While super lightweight, it offers serious warmth; courtesy of a clever aluminium mid layer, and has multiple compartments for valuables and a warm change of clothes (and for chilly fingers, the borg-lined pockets are a nice touch).

This khaki coat also comes with elasticated, sweatshirt-style cuffs, rather than fiddly velcro, and an oversized hood that, in tests, managed to cover both over-ear headphones and a woolly hat.

We should mention that it is rather oversized, so absolutely size down — but is that such a bad thing when you can share with your other half?

      Also available in black.

      Best towelling changing robe

Vivida Original Poncho Towel Changing Robe

      Original Poncho Towel Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Dries significantly faster than cotton
      • Packs down small for travel
      • Secure valuables pocket (rare for towelling styles)

      Cons

      • Microfibre feel isn’t for everyone

This microfibre towelling change robe from Vivida is super fast-drying (it claims to dry four times faster than cotton) and absorbs seven times its weight in water. We've only worn it on warm days and it did dry very fast, but can't speak to how it might hold up in chillier climes.

Available in a bunch of surf girl-cool colours, it has a handy kangaroo pocket on the front which houses another small zipped pocket to keep valuables safe — we found it fitted a smartphone perfectly.

The robe is smooth and soft, packs down small despite its roomy fit (even in the small size we had more than ample space) and side and underarm slits make changing simple. And it's machine washable!

      Available in four two-tone colourways.

      Passenger Campscape Fleece Lined Parka

      Campscape Fleece Lined Parka

      Pros

      • Waterproof seat panel is brilliantly practical
      • Cosy quilted design with fleece lining
      • Packs into its own pocket — great for travel

      Cons

      • Not the easiest to change inside

If your adventures lean more campfire-and-coffee than icy plunge-at-dawn, the Passenger Campscape Fleece Lined Parka is a genuinely clever alternative to a traditional changing robe. Think less rustly swim staple, more beautifully made, long quilted jacket — but with outdoorsy practicality baked in.

The standout feature? A waterproof seat panel at the back, designed so you can perch on damp grass, cold rocks or dewy camping chairs without soaking through. It’s such a simple but ingenious addition, and makes this robe particularly brilliant for camping, festivals and general roaming. The outer is water-resistant, while inside there’s a low-pile polar fleece lining that’s warm and cosy without feeling bulky. (Note: the sleeves aren’t fleece-lined.)

Fastened with a popper placket rather than a zip, it feels more like a roomy parka than a dedicated changing robe. You can change inside it, but you’ll need to undo a fair few poppers — sizing up would help if that’s your main goal. Storage is excellent: two deep, drop-in hand pockets (ideal for a torch or camping mug), plus an interior zipped chest pocket with an elastic loop (though the zip did catch slightly in testing). It also packs into its own pocket, which is easier to do than expected.

The hood is snug, cuffs are Velcro adjustable, and each of the three colourways features gorgeous contrast trim. A stylish, practical all-rounder for outdoor living.

Buy if: You want a stylish, camping-ready coat that handles damp ground and everyday adventures with ease.
Don’t buy if: You need a fully waterproof, quick-change swim robe.

      Finisterre Clearwater Changing Robe

      Clearwater Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Ultra-soft organic cotton feel
      • Generous oversized cut
      • Beautiful minimalist aesthetic

      Cons

      • No pockets

You know when you've had a shower and you're wrapped in a towel so cosy that you just sit on your bed staring into space rather than get changed? That feeling is this changing robe. It's so gorgeously soft and wonderfully roomy — the extra folds of material mean you can really snuggle up in it — that it's difficult to take off (only emotionally — physically it just pops over your head).

It is one size but that does seem to cater for all — it feels cosily oversized on me at 5’4”, but it’s also being used (stolen) on the reg by my 6’2” boyfriend who relies on it to take the edge off after an ice bath.

Note that it doesn't have any pockets so you'll need to stow valuables elsewhere, but it's a fantastic chuck-on option when you need a little protection from the elements, or just a safe place to change post-swim.

      Currently available in three colours.

      Best changing robe for triathletes

      Dryrobe Tech-Lite Changing Robe

      Tech-Lite Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Exceptionally lightweight for performance robe
      • Great for travel and endurance events
      • Quick-dry lining allows repeat use

      Cons

      • No velcro cuffs for storm sealing

One issue with testing out numerous changing robes is that your coat closet space gets rather full pretty quickly. Which is why we’re especially pleased with this innovation from Dryrobe — a light and super compact version of the Dryrobe Advance.

Weighing just 950g, it packs down into a 38cm zipped stuff-sack but still offers the same warmth features as a standard Dryrobe, so it's a great portable option for adventurous souls on the move (it was designed with triathletes and endurance athletes in mind) or those who want to take their changing robe on hols with them.

Recycled plastic bottles make up the fully waterproof and weatherproof outer shell, while the lining is made from water-repellent Polartec (recycled fleece), which not only keeps you super warm by maintaining your core temperature but also wicks away moisture and dries incredibly fast, so you can use it multiple times in one day without that grim wet-towel feeling.

Buy if: You need something lightweight and effective.
